Now THAT’s hockey

The other day my good friday Wuxia asked me to name some of my favorite websites of the moment. Oh, the dreaded question! I work in web, spend 8-10 hours in front of my computer EVERY DAY and manage the production of half a dozen websites every month, but still to me this questions is as hard as naming my favorite player on this year’s habs edition…

But then I tried to think about which sites I check out on a daily basis. Apart from the obvious yahoo (news and hockey pool), gmail (email), meteomedia (local weather forecast), RDS (sports) etc… there was one not so obvious name that came to mind: hockeyfights.com

What’s not to like about hockeyfights.com? It’s got an ugly design, it’s easy to navigate and it was doing web 2.0 way before Facebook existed. And oh, it serves a very specific niche that no other website does:

It takes one of the best part of hockey (fighting), isolates it from the rest of the sport, and creates a community where you can see every fight in the NHL (thanks youtube), vote for the winner and write crap about Tucker, Kaleta or Carcillo to say how much you hate them. There’s even a ranking of the players with most fighting majors, and log of every fight in the nhl since 1974 (I’m not joking).

If you’re still trying to figure why I think fighting in the NHL is so cool to watch, check out this bout that took place a few weeks ago, between heavyweights Brandon Prust and Rick Rypien. Definitely one of the best fights I’ve seen in a while from two very tough customers:

Now THAT’S hockey!
